Description The New Jogyesa Temple is the chief temple of the Jogye Order, a section of Korean Buddhism, located in Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu, in downtown Neo-Seoul. New Jogyesa Temple became the chief temple almost a century and a half ago, in 1936. The temple has gone through several name changes, initially being called “Hwanggaksa”. During the period of Japanese rule, the name was changed to “Taegosa”. The name was finally changed to Jogyesa in 1954, in an effort by Korea to distance themselves from the Japanese traditions. After the temple was destroyed in an accident in 2055, it was rebuilt and promptly renamed “New Jogyesa”.
Buddhism, along with religion as a whole, has experienced a boon in Korean society as of late, mainly due to the existence of side effects in Brainstorm that allow users to experience memories of other people who have died. Buddhism explains this phenomenon as the user becoming closer to Nirvana, a comforting thought for many people who have gone through it.
